今回の渡航目的

Being the representative of the Prix Ikuo Hirayama 2021 laureates for the publication of Cave Inscriptions in Ancient Kucha 龜茲石窟題記 (Shanghai, 2020), I was invited to the annual assemblyof the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (AIBL) ofthe Institut de France (フランス学士院), situated at the city centerof Paris.

フランス学士院てどんなとこ?

Founded in 1663, the Institut de France faces the scenery Pont des Arts (芸術橋) on the Seine River which links it to the Louvre Museum. Unlike ordinary AIBL assemblies held at the library of the Institut, annual AIBL assemblies are held under the dome.

発見と成果

During the Assembly on 26 November 2021, I reunited with my colleagues and leading scholars in France and from other countries. I was impressed by the sense of ceremony: solemn drumbeats by la Garde Republicaine (共和国親衛隊); swords and medals on academicians’ dark green dress coats; guests from royal classes and historical families … On the other hand, the individualism and the haute couture (オートクチュール) being so widespread and advanced in France are noticeable: the flowery patterns of gold embroidery and the curves of collars never repeat on any academician attire. Nevertheless, several gentlemen and ladies chose not to wear their noblesse-like academician dress but modern suits. I feel that their choice is performance of the French soul of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. During my trip, I also visited the Guimet Museum and saw two exhibitions: one on the old photos of Bamiyan (Afghanistan); another on the National Archaeological Treasures of Tajikistan. I collected abundant data for my Hakubi research in the museum.

ちょっと一息

Unlike the serious event under the dome, the Guimet Museum and other open space for French public was cosy and comfortable, even though the Covid-19 conditions were severe in autumn-winter 2021. At the Guimet, I happily saw many students and amateurs sitting in front of masterpieces and drawing their sketches attentively. It almost incited me to sit on the ground, too!
