『The Global Education Reform Puzzle: Putting Together the Pieces』
Educational systems are being aggressively reformed throughout the World. Some argue that reform is necessary to keep pace with a new global economy and technological change. Others argue that the reforms are instead driven by an emerging ‘global culture’ centered on shared faith in science and democracy. More pessimistically, some see these reforms as simply political façade: education continues in much the same way it always has and calls for education ‘reforms’ are simply smaller acts in the larger drama of national politics and/or international relations. The seminar begins by sketching the outlines of the larger social theories about global educational change, then illustrating with the familiar example of the educational reforms in Japan over the past two decades. The talk draws not only on the presenter's research to date (Reimagining Japanese Education, 2011), but also on the audience member's own images about what is driving change in Japanese education. Time permitting, the presenter's current research project in developing country contexts will be briefly sketched: an attempt to extend the research imaginary beyond the comfortable borders of the rich World, contemplate rising global inequality, and the landscape of global education in the future. The goal is to challenge some of the most fundamental ‘truths’ about educational change, the drivers of social action, and globalization — themes that extend far beyond the confines of educational research as traditionally conceptualized.
