第274回白眉セミナー : Language as Social and Commodity Resources: Ideologies and Values under Negotiation

要旨

Rather than being mere tools, languages and their varieties function as active resources through which people construct identities and social relations, both individually and collectively. From a third wave sociolinguistic perspective, linguistic variation conveys more than semantic value: it indexes social meanings. It is in this process of identity work that negotiations over language ownership—questions of who can say what to whom, and when—emerge, shaping how languages are used and how speakers are perceived.

My research, located at the intersection of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, explores these negotiations of ownership and speakerhood. In this talk, I will situate my work within broader sociolinguistic research in Japan and beyond, while also reflecting on its implications outside the field. I will first draw on my doctoral research on the speakerhood of the Kansai dialect, showing how beliefs and ideologies surrounding this and other regional varieties are perpetuated through everyday interactions and media representations. I will then turn to my current project as a Hakubi researcher on the commodification of dialects through dialect souvenirs, sharing some of my initial data collection.
