第115回白眉セミナー ： 『What is possible on Hakubi? Reflections on Education and Self-Overcoming』

要旨
What is the purpose of Hakubi? What should I do with 5 years of unlimited of freedom and virtually unlimited resources for research? How to make the most out of Shangri-La? Those of us lucky enough to be selected as Hakubi Researchers have all thought about these questions, each coming up with their own answer. In this Farewell lecture, I discuss my path on Hakubi, one which I believe is somewhat unique and might be a model for other Hakubi researchers. I will begin the talk with a brief review of my field, my work before entering Hakubi, and my initial thoughts to the questions above. Then I will turn to the main part of my talk: describing how my Hakubi time was marked by deep philosophical discussions with another Hakubi researcher working in a completely different field (Hikaru Komatsu). By summarising 4 co-authored papers that came out of this 3 years of intense collaboration, I hope to share my process of (i) paradigm shift, (ii) philosophical deepening, and (iii) movement beyond the narrow confines of my own discipline. Rather than focus solely on my own accomplishments and experiences though, I hope the talk will demonstrate what is possible on Hakubi and open space for us to discuss the potential and pitfalls of the original Hakubi ideal. Audience members need not be a specialist in educational studies or social science to understand the talk. It is possible that parts of the presentation will be co-presented with Hikaru Komatsu, depending on his availability.

白眉での最もありがたい経験の一つは学生さん接するゼミを持つことができたことです。我々はそのゼミの名前を「黒眉ゼミ」と名付けました。御存知のように白眉というのは優秀な5人の兄弟の中でも飛びぬけて優秀だった白い眉を持つ男の話に起源を持つとされております。私の幸か不幸か眉毛は黒々としており、残念ながらまったくもって優秀ではありません。白眉プロジェクトではそういう意味で肩身が狭い想いも感じたこともあるのですが、一方で、平凡でもいいじゃないか！馬鹿でもいいじゃないか！という想いもあるんです。ブータンの友人に言われた言葉の一つに、「しあわせというのは人生で身につけるべき最も大切な技術である」と言われたことがあります。ゼミでは、私を含めたゼミを構成するメンバー一人一人がしあわせな一生を送るにはどうしたらいいのか、をテーマの一つと考えました。黒眉ゼミに参加いただいた学生さんは、皆さんそれはそれは優秀なメンバーばかりでしたが、ゼミでは凡人である私がブータンでの診療を通じて経験した日常の魅力を紹介しながら、ゼミを構成するメンバーそれぞれの悩みや夢を語っていただき、得難い時間を共有しました。
