Role of gut hormones in type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Type-2 diabetes is one of the most common risk factor in the metabolic syndrome. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that in 2013, there were over 382 million diabetic patients, 5.1 million diabetes-related deaths and the burden of USD 548 billion on the health care system worldwide. In Japan alone, there were at least 7.2 million diabetic patients in Japan costing an estimated USD 29 billion in 2013. Recently the role of gut derived incretin hormones in modifying cardiovascular risk factors, particularly glucose and insulin resistance, has gained much attention. However, the regulation of these hormones and the direct cardiovascular effects are unclear. In this seminar, I will discuss these controversies and how I intend to address them in my research plan.
