Visualization and manipulation of intermolecular interaction by high-pressure microscopy
Hydrostatic pressure is an important factor that characterizes the physiological environment for biological species. The application of pressures is known to cause significant changes in cell morphology and activities. The pressure-induced effects are ascribed to the modulation of the hydrogen-bonded network between protein and water molecules. My research goal is to elucidate the mechanism of how protein molecules perform biological functions in collaboration with water molecules. I have developed a novel microscope to modulate the structure and function of protein molecules with high-pressure techniques. In my seminar, I will show how applied pressure changes the ability to move of swimming E. coli cells and their flagellar motors.
