Carbon dynamics in forests revealed by gas exchange observations
Forests are expected to play an important role in preventing global warming because plants absorb and fix carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and water-unsaturated soils uptake methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. To scientifically evaluate the function of forests and predict the future under climate changes, it is necessary to monitor greenhouse gas exchanges (flux) between forests and the atmosphere in the filed in detail and in the long term and clarify the controlling factors. Methane is part of the carbon cycle in forests, but flux observations in the field are highly limited and the process is not understood well. In this seminar, I will show the results of methane flux observations in forests under different climates, and I would like to discuss the role of forests in greenhouse gas balance.
