Quantum computer: an intersection of information/physics, fundamental/applied, and science/engineering
The microscopic physical world is described by quantum mechanics, on which technologies surrounding us like semiconductor, MRI(NMR), and Laser, are relying. A quantum computer aims to apply quantum mechanics, specifically quantum mechanical superposition, directly to accelerate computation. A quantum computer is thought to provide exponential speedup of computation for certain important tasks such as factoring, chemical and material simulation, and machine learning. Recently, IT enterprises like Google, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft, venture companies and governments, are making extensive efforts for realization of a quantum computer. In this talk, starting from what is quantum mechanics, I will provide the history of quantum computing, how a quantum computer works, state-of-the-art quantum computer, and my research interest on this topic.
