My philosophical practice in Kyoto University
Short introduction (http://www.hakubi.kyoto-u.ac.jp/eng/02_mem/04vincent.shtml)
Vincent’s philosophical practice is rooted in the tradition of French phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty, Lévinas, Henry, Marion...). While completing his PhD on Augustine (354-430) in Paris, he discovered the philosophy of the “Kyoto School”. Immediately fascinated by these thinkers, he decided to come to Japan. His research aims to bring to light the links maintained by the Kyoto School philosophers with Neoplatonism and to show how they used this western tradition within their distinctively Japanese philosophical explorations. For it is a surprising fact that this tradition, which began with PLOTINUS (205-270) and which powerfully influenced western philosophy over the centuries, provided a key reference for each of the major Kyoto School thinkers: NISHIDA Kitaro, TANABE Hajime and NISHITANI Keiji. On this basis, Vincent also seeks to pave the way for the reception of philosophical theses from the East by contemporary western thinkers, and thus to ensure the continuing fecundity of the Kyoto School beyond Japanese frontiers.
