Research Topic: Changing Society along with Developing Port Towns in Early Modern India
Ikuko's research field is the history of South Asia and the Indian Ocean, where humans have engaged in dynamic activities from an early era. In this project, she deals mainly with several port towns on the Coromandel Coast, South India, in the early modern period. The objective is to explore the changing features of Coromandel society along with the rise and fall of port towns by focusing on interactions between inland and maritime societies. The port towns, located on the edge of the inland political sphere, were involved in changing situations both regional and global. They tended to attract people with different backgrounds from near and far and to develop a cosmopolitan society. The reports, memoirs, documents, chronicles etc. written by such various contemporaries in their own languages are the most important sources for her present research.
