Can we use “ethology” for controlling invader animals?
Ethology (Animal behaviour) is a science field to understand the meaning of individual’s behaviour and why this behaviour has been evolved. Behaviour of animal has species specificity, and is influenced by other species behabiour. Can we use this species specificity behaviour to solve the problems of invader animal that destroy local ecosystem in the world? Cane toad (Rhinella marina) is large anuran, and was introduced to more than 40 countries worldwide as invader animal. In also Japan, cane toads were introduced and located in several islands (Ogasawara, Ishigaki, etc). In this seminar, I talk some controlling methods of cane toads using their species specificity behaviour. I also want to discuss about the further controlling methods of cane toads. And, another research topic that is about frog (Buergeria japonica) inhabiting coastal area will be talked.
After the seminar, we will introduce official Hakubi events to everyone (especially, to the 7th-batch). Furthermore, Jennifer-san (5th-batch) will give her talk about Hakubi Symposium, and Hayashi-san (6th-batch) will introduce the recent activity of "Biocycology WG" (http://biocyclology.wpblog.jp).
