Short Introduction

The relationship between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula can be traced back to prehistoric times. Interaction between the two was especially active during the Kofun period, and numerous objects that crossed the Sea of Japan have been uncovered from both regions. Through analysis of the burial goods found in elite tombs, and consideration of the nature of the movement of these goods and the spread of production techniques, I am conducting research into the relations between these two regions during this period. Unfortunately, discussion of the historical relations between Japan and Korea is often influenced by preconceived or nationalistic ideas. Through archaeological analysis of the artifacts themselves, I therefore aim to objectively evaluate the effects both regions had on each other and to present a new history of intercultural relations.
