Research Topic: Understanding the mechanism controlling phase polyphenism and developing a pest control technique for desert locusts in Africa
Koutaro has been studying desert locusts which often break out and destroy agricultural crops in Africa. He has observed locusts in the middle of the Sahara desert to understand their biology. He tried to fight off a swarm of locusts with an insect net in 2013. As a result, he realized his powerless and the importance of research activity. His middle name "Ould (son of ~)" indicates his determination to dedicate his life to studying locusts. From ancient times, locust outbreaks have been considered a kind of natural disaster: Koutaro intends to use the Hakubi project to counter this problem.
