Research Topic: Visualization of Interactions between Biomolecules and Water Molecules
During junior high school, Kei learned that everything, including our body, is made of atoms and molecules in chemistry class, but he always wondered how people came to know that. Ever since then he dreamed of one day being able to actually see atoms and molecules. Then, at an electronics laboratory of Kyoto University he came across the technique called atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM is capable of imaging atoms or molecules and measuring various physical properties by detecting tiny forces exerted on an atomically sharp tip brought very close to a sample surface. Previously, he used AFM in the field of electronics, but in the Hakubi project he will also use AFM for the mapping of hydration structures and surface charges on biomolecules in order to visualize how they function.
