Research Interests: Cultural Anthropology, Area Studies
Research Topic: Chinese Diaspora in Asia and the Search for a New Paradigm of Multi-Diversified Co-existence
Liulan was born in Kobe city, Hyogo Prefecture, and was raised by a Taiwanese father and a Japanese mother. Her research topic on Chinese Diaspora is strongly influenced by her cross-cultural family background. When she was an undergraduate student, however, she majored in English literature first and did not consider anthropology or crosscultural studies. The change to these fields came when she encountered anthropologists during undergraduate and graduate school. Through these encounters she became fascinated with fieldwork and started to reflect deeply on cultural issues and ethnic identity. This has been the driving force of her research since then. In the Hakubi project, Liulan will focus on the Chinese Diaspora in Asia, in particular on crossborder relations and dynamics of religious movements. At the same time, she will search for a new paradigm through which to discuss open and diversified co-existence in anthropological and area studies.
