Summary

According to Chinese historical records, the Khitan people, who established the Liao dynasty (907-1125), created a writing system which was designated as the Khitan Script to record their language. With a large number of Khitan epitaphs being unearthed, researchers managed to grasp the characteristics of Khitan language and significant progress has been made in deciphering it in recent years. However, the work is still far from complete, where Khitan Script has still remained as a hitherto undeciphered script on the whole. In this seminar, the current situations and issues regarding the decipherment of Khitan Script will be discussed.
