Summary
Postwar Japanese history is often framed as a series of events and their political and social impacts. However, understanding historical change requires an understanding of the process of recording and remembering events as well as the events themselves – the tale and the telling are equally important. National cinemas are often utilized to create national narratives, and collective memories of national change. This seminar suggests that film studies can be used to broaden our understanding of Japanese postwar history by giving an insight into the hopes, fantasies and memory-making practices of the general populace.
