Summary

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are thought to show difficulties to understand others’ emotionsand to experience difficulty empathizing with others. Although deficits in ASD have been demonstrated in previous studies, most of the target stimuli used in those studies were constructed for typically developing (TD) individuals. Importantly, it may be difficult for individuals with ASD to understand TD individuals, just as it is difficult for TD individuals to understand those with ASD. When perceivers and targets are matched in personality, TD perceivers empathize with targets similar to themselves. If this were also the case for individuals with ASD, these individuals may show empathy, a process in which one identifies with similar others. In this talk, I will describe recent studies and our current projects on how individuals with ASD regard other individuals with ASD based on experimental psychological approaches and neuroimaging methods.
