Summary

Religion is a pillar for the heart in a variety of life’s turning points that maintains our vitality. At the same time, it connects people of the same faith and plays a vital role in creating, recreating and enhancing the community. This presentation will share the experiences of how Chinese Muslim diasporas identify themselves and reshape and reactivate their communities in Thailand through their Islamic and cultural heritage. At the middle of the 20th century, when civil war broke out in China, many civilian Muslims escaped to Thailand, facing many difficulties throughout the migratory process. Although they shared a sense of loss of home, Chinese Muslims also remained hopeful and retained their faith in Islam. By harmonizing ethnic and religious heritage with other Muslims in their new land, they recreated new families, neighborhoods and communities. This investigation of the Chinese Muslims diaspora offers valuable insights to the potential of the immigrant community and the transformation of national borders.
