Summary

In the second half of the 18th century, music concerts began to be held in music halls, which were built specifically for concerts. Before that, music concerts were held mainly in churches or at noble courts. Consequently, classical music became a bourgeois thing. How did this process change and influence the style of classical music? As an example, I will describe the case of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. It is the oldest orchestra in the world and they held the first regular concert on November 25, 1781. Which changes can we find in their programs? I have studied the programs from their first concert and onwards until the twentieth century, which were kept in the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig. I will show how a new style of musical life was established. There will also be a little performance in the lecture.
