Summary
For decades, high health care spending growth has been a feature of health care systems in all developed countries. Its growth is usually faster than that of income and the development of sustainable health care financing is one of the central policy issues. Health economics literature suggests that the adoption and diffusion of new medical technology is the most important determinant of this growth.
Collective finance through taxation and social health insurance and the insufficient information that consumers have usually do not enable individuals to consume optimal health care, unlike conventional goods in a competitive market. Thus, medical cost-effectiveness analysis has been used to support policymakers concerning the allocation of health care resources. However, there are many methodological debates in this field. In this seminar, I will introduce current issues regardging health care expenditures and health technology assessments and then talk about my ongoing projects.
