Summary
We are now developing a health promotion program for the elderly in the Kingdom of Bhutan in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. The program focuses on conducting health checkups for the elderly as an important opportunity to identify problems around the elderly and to prevent the elderly from future diseases, disabilities, and premature deaths. The elderly tend to face several problems such as disability, dementia, depression, diabetes, dental problems, isolation, hypertension, alcoholism, visual problems, ear problems, fall-related problems, urinary incontinence, and nutritional problems. We call them 5 Ds, I HAVE FUN for short. We think we should include not only people who come to medical facilities but also those who do not come, since some people are unable to come to the facilities even if they want to. Thus, medical staff should visit the houses of the elderly when needed. We hope the program will trigger and help to promote the health of the people and strengthen the bonds and harmony in the communities.
