Summary
Ever since the proposal of “Maxwell’s demon” in the 19th century, the relationship between thermodynamics and information has attracted much attention to the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics. The demon observes a physical system at the molecular level and controls it based on the obtained information, and the demon then seems to be able to violate the second law of thermodynamics. Due to the recent development of experimental technologies to manipulate thermodynamic systems at the nano and microscopic levels, the demon has become an experimental issue beyond the classic gedankenexperiment. In this seminar, starting from an introduction of thermodynamics and information theory, I’d like to talk about our recent theoretical and experimental results on a generalized thermodynamics including information contents.
