No.277 Seminar : Tertiary lymphoid structures : Toward a unified therapeutic strategy for age-related diseases

Summary

Advances in medical science and public health have brought about an era in which the majority of people live beyond 65 years of age. As a result, age-related diseases now account for most causes of death. These diseases often coexist, and in recent years, rather than treating each condition individually, there has been growing interest in developing therapies that target the common risk factors shared among age-related diseases. One such representative risk factor that has attracted increasing attention is immune aging. My research has focused on the pathophysiology of age-related diseases such as chronic kidney disease and autoimmune disorders, revealing that tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs)—ectopic lymphoid aggregates forming within target organs—play a key role in sustaining and amplifying local inflammation, contributing to disease progression. In this seminar, I will discuss the potential of TLS-targeting strategies as a novel, integrative therapeutic approach for age-related diseases, highlighting findings from my previous studies and ongoing projects in the Hakubi Project.
