Summary

Memory is an essential aspect of our daily lives, profoundly influencing how we perceive ourselves and interact with the world.  Memory has been the subject of research in various fields since ancient times, but in the last 100 years, our understanding of it has advanced dramatically in the field of neuroscience.

In recent years, research in memory using light has been particularly active. I have recently developed a novel method that allows the erasure of memories of events that occurred immediately prior, using light (Goto et al., Science, 2021). This is basically the same as the tool used in the movie “Men in Black”.

Why is this kind of technology important for memory research? How will it be applied in the future? What are the advantages of using light? This seminar will introduce the basics of memory research and future issues.
