Summary

In this joint seminar, Nate and Aaron present a reflective update on research activities carried out over the past year. Although our research topics and field sites are very different, we both use ethnographic, field-based research methods. As such, we grapple with a range of shared risks, challenges and expectations in our fieldwork. Aaron is an anthropologist working from a US-Japan comparative perspective on sports and education. Nate’s background is in area studies, and is interested in linguistic diversity within the rapid socio-economic changes taking place in Southeast Asia. We both have focused our efforts in this first year on fieldwork, and will take this opportunity to give an update on our activities, while sharing some reflections on issues related to ethnographic research that we deal with on a daily basis.

The seminar will consist of two sections. The first section will be a brief introduction to the research topics and results from the first year. The second section will be a more detailed discussion of reflections on ethnographic research. It is hoped that this will lead into a larger discussion among Hakubi researchers regarding different perspectives on research approaches across the multiple disciplines that we represent.
