Summary
Development of the modern society has been achieved thanks to development of the electric devices. The main parts of the electric devices are composed of the semiconductor devices. Hundreds of millions of transistors are actually incorporated into the electric devices such as the personal computers, the cellular phones and so on, and realize logic operation, data storage, optical communication. To realize the sustainable development of the modern society and to solve the remaining issues in it, further development of semiconductor devices is strongly desired. Over the past twenty years, the performance of the semiconductor devices has been improved by reducing the size of device components. However, such an approach is now failing as a result of inherent physical limitations, unfortunately. Now I am attempting to resolve this issue by using electron spin which provides a drastic change in the operating principle of the semiconductor devices. In the seminar, fundamentals of the semiconductor physics and the semiconductor deviceswill be explained for non-experts. The current situation and issues of the semiconductor spintoronics will also be explained.
