Summary

Plants release volatiles when you tear the plants. These volatiles are varry depending on how the plant gets the damaged; like by clipping, herbivores or diseases. Moreover, the volatiles are different depending on feeding herbivore species. The volatiles are called “Plant Induced Volatiles”, which work as an immunity system for the plant itself and affects other organisms as well. In this seminar I will show the biological interactions via plant induced volatiles which I have studied.

1) Biological interaction network through plant induced volatiles: in concept of tritrophic interactions (plant-herbivore-natural enemy), natural enemies in searching their prey use plant volatiles which are induced by the prey. When other herbivore species start eating the plant which are damaged by the prey or host herbivore, the induced volatiles are changed and the biological interaction are modified. 2) Plant volatile and nocturnal behavior of insect: plants release different volatiles between day and night. Nocturnal behavior of some larvae is controlled by volatile difference between day and night. 3) Plants communication: Plant increase their defense mechanism when neighboring plants get damaged.
