Summary

I have been visiting Tibetan societies in China for more than 20 years so far. In present day China which continues economic expansion, also in order to control domestic dissatisfaction, the communist government is seeking to be truly recognized as a “strong nation” from the international society by using absolute influence to neighboring countries. The problems between Japan and China such as “Historical Recognition” and “Territorial Conflict” are including into this trend as well. However, our understanding to China as a neighbor who faced across the sea often tends to be limited. In Japan, only local phenomena, such as “Bakugai” and “Senkaku”, tend to attract attention. But those issues are consisting of only few part of entire phenomenon which is caused by China’s global activities. If we always focus on a limited part of the entire phenomenon, we will overlook the complexity of China’s various influences in the modern world. Through my future research period, I plan to have a long term fieldwork in particular Tibetan village at the border zone of China and Nepal (Nepal side), and try to construct a research framework which can analyze contemporary China from its outer edge by observing carefully how does Tibetan people receive/reject the “Chinese-ness” that surges across the Himalayas. At this seminar, three items, (1) previous research result in China-Tibet, (2) present development condition in Nepal-Himalaya, and (3) research outlook of “The World of Neighboring China”, will be introduced. Moreover, in order to analyze comprehensively “The World of Neighboring China” which holds the huge international border, I will talk about what kind of research network is expectable.

* Before Dr. Bessho’s talk, Dr. Takeuchi will give a short talk on his stay in U.S.A.
