Summary

How do people remember the past? How does this affect contemporary politics? In this Hakubi Seminar, I will outline how, as a historian, I analyze the formation, discourse, and disputes over collective memory. Drawing on my previous research on how South Korea after transitioning to democracy in 1987 has struggled to find a uniting narrative concerning its Cold War origins (1945–48), I will introduce my plans to place the Korean “history wars” into a global context, and hope for a fruitful discussion surrounding my hypotheses and ideas.
