Ecosystem consequences of parasitism, Ecosystem interaction

What can the complex interaction among organisms play a role in ecosystem? This question not only becomes an interesting theme in natural science, but has important implications for applied science because this theme contributes the elucidation and prediction of species diversity-ecosystem function relationships. Recently, I found a parasitic hairworm (Nematomorpha) can cause a parasite-mediated energy flow (PMEF) from forest to stream ecosystems via host manipulation. Through the Hakubi Project, I will reveal the generality, mechanisms and ecological consequences of the PMEF. These studies will offer a new insight into conservation and/or management of interacting ecosystems.
