Research TopicIdentification of Novel Nucleolus Function
The encounter with a good mentor led Sugako to be great deal of interest in the biology. Thanks to her insistence, jauntiness, luck, and especially understanding colleagues, she could keep studying until now. From 2001, she started the research of the nucleolus function in mammalian oocytes in collaboration with Dr. Josef Fulka Jr. in Institute of Animal Science (Czech). The primary function of the nucleolus is in ribosome biogenesis for protein synthesis, but this activity ceases in fully-grown oocytes and fertilized eggs. The nucleolus in oocytes is, however, essential for proper early embryonic development. During Hakubi project, Sugako will be working to answer the precise function of the oocyte nucleolus and its molecular components by determining the proteins and RNAs present.
