Research TopicNumber Concepts in a Non-literate Society in Austronesia: An Ethnomathematics Approach
Noa has loved nature, languages, and music since childhood and is therefore currently pursuing these interests. She has been working on languages in Austronesian areas such as Malagasy, Rurutu (in French Polynesia, Rapanui in Easter Island) from the perspective of descriptive linguistics. In this project, she will focus on number concepts of non-literate societies, that is, how they recognize and apply natural phenomena such as celestial motion, seasonal periodicity, and local natural resources in their daily life. Thus, Noa is set to undertake the significant challenge of presenting a fresh “ethnomathematical” perspective on Austronesian nonliterate societies, including those of Madagascar, Polynesia, and Southeast Asia. Although this is a formidable challenge, Noa has the determination to pursue it.
