Research TopicIdentifying Genetic Mechanisms of Inter-specific Hybrid Sterility Toward Creating Inter-specific Compatible Genes in Rice
Yohei wanted to contribute to solving the food problem in the world and started studying agricultural sciences. After completing graduate studies, he worked at the International Rice Research Center and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences where he studied methods to improve rice for developing countries. In this project, he aims to produce rice varieties with high-productivity by using African rice species, which are not well known in Japan. He found that hybrids between African and Asian rice show vigorous growth. However, these inter-specific hybrids do not produce seeds. He is going to investigate why the inter-specific hybrids do not produce seeds and develop techniques to have them produce seeds.
