Research TopicNumerical Approach to Open Problems in Particle Physics
Since Masanori knew from early on that he could not become a soccer or baseball player, he first envisioned a career as a historian, then as an astronaut exploring Mars or a mathematician, before finally opting for theoretical physics. He is interested in theoretical particle physics and in particular string theory, which is a promising candidate for the quantum theory of gravity. In particle physics, ‘quantum field theories’ play crucial roles, but it is hard to solve the theories analytically as further numerical techniques are needed to answer various important questions. However, somehow it seems that most string theorists take a dislike to numerical analysis. Since it is nonetheless an unexplored subject of g reat importance, Masanori decided it was up to him to study it. His short-term goal is to demonstrate that a certain quantum field theory can correctly capture the quantum nature of string theory.
